How Automatic Crash Response Works

OnStar Learning Hub

Unlock the full potential of in-vehicle technology

In a crash, every second matters. Automatic Crash Response helps get you the right help, right away.

Crashes are unexpected and overwhelming—but with OnStar, you’re never alone. Automatic Crash Response uses built-in vehicle sensors to detect the severity of an impact and immediately connect you with a live Advisor.

Even if you can’t call for help yourself, OnStar can share critical details like your exact location, speed, direction of impact, and airbag deployment with emergency responders—so help gets to you as quickly as possible.

How It Works

  • Sensors in your vehicle detect the impact and severity of a crash.
  • A signal is automatically sent to OnStar, available 24/7.
  • A trained Advisor connects to your vehicle, checks on you, and can contact emergency services.
  • Even if you’re unable to respond, details like location and crash data are shared with first responders to help them arrive prepared.

Plan Requirements

Automatic Crash Response is included in select OnStar plans, such as Protect and the Protect & Connect Bundle. An active plan, GPS signal, and cell reception are required.

Tips to Remember

  • Not all vehicles transmit all types of crash data.
  • A working electrical system, cell signal, and GPS connection are needed.
  • OnStar links you directly to local emergency services for the fastest possible help.
