OnStar Learning Hub
Unlock the full potential of in-vehicle technology
If your vehicle is ever stolen, OnStar works with law enforcement to help recover it quickly and safely.
Having your vehicle stolen can feel overwhelming—but with OnStar, you don’t have to face it alone. Once you’ve filed a police report and reported this to OnStar, our OnStar Advisors work directly with law enforcement to help track down and recover your vehicle.
With features like theft alarm alerts, ignition blocking, and safe slowdown technology, OnStar gives police the tools they need to act quickly and safely. It’s extra support in a stressful moment—helping you get back behind the wheel with greater peace of mind.
How It Works
Report the theft:
File a police report, then press the blue OnStar button to alert an Advisor.
Law enforcement notified:
OnStar shares your vehicle details with authorities and provides recovery support.
Recovery features may include:
- Theft Alarm Notification – Alerts you if your vehicle’s alarm goes off.
- Remote Ignition Block – Prevents the engine from restarting once turned off.
- Stolen Vehicle Slowdown – Works with law enforcement to safely slow the vehicle during a pursuit.
Updates:
You’ll receive progress updates from OnStar or law enforcement until your vehicle is recovered.
Plan Requirements
Stolen Vehicle Assistance is included with select OnStar plans such as Protect and the Protect & Connect Bundle. An active plan, GPS signal, and cell reception are required.
Tips to Remember
- Location details are only shared with law enforcement for your safety.
- Features like Slowdown and Remote Ignition Block will not damage your engine.
- OnStar services assist recovery but do not prevent theft or protect against damage.
