OnStar Learning Hub
Unlock the full potential of in-vehicle technology
Get the latest features and fixes with simple over‑the‑air updates, delivered straight to your vehicle.
Vehicle software updates let you receive new features and refinements without visiting a service center. Using over‑the‑air (OTA) technology, updates are downloaded directly to your vehicle and installed automatically or via a Wi‑Fi® connection. There’s no paid data plan required.
How It Works
Updates are handled in two steps: software download and installation.
When a new update is available, your vehicle will notify you and guide you through the process on screen.
- Updates download automatically in the background.
- You can continue to use your vehicle as normal during the download.
- Installation requires the vehicle to be in PARK with the engine off.
Before You Start
For a smooth update experience:
- Ensure your vehicle has strong network connectivity. Avoid underground or covered parking.
- To enable vehicle software updates, you must have accepted the connected vehicle User Terms for Connected Vehicle Services and OnStar Privacy Statement for the vehicle.
- Update notifications will appear in your vehicle, and you can also check manually via the center display.
During the Download
The software download runs quietly in the background. If you turn off the vehicle or lose signal, the process pauses and resumes automatically once conditions are right. Download time will vary depending on the update size and signal strength.
Installing the Update
When the download is complete, you’ll be prompted to install it:
- Most installations take 20 minutes or less.
- You’ll need to park in a safe location and switch the engine off to begin.
- You can choose to install immediately, schedule it for later, or decline.
- While an update installs, the vehicle can’t be driven, and some features (like locks and chimes) may be temporarily unavailable.

Tips to Remember
It’s normal for the center display to stay active or reset during installation. You don’t need to remain in the vehicle, but ensure it’s parked securely and no one is locked inside.
