What is OnStar® Smart Driver?

OnStar Smart Driver* is an optional service that provides customers with information about their driving behavior to help them maximize their vehicle’s overall performance, reduce vehicle wear and tear and encourage safer driving. Customers who enroll in OnStar Smart Driver , get valuable feedback with each trip and access their driving data from their, myCadillac, myChevrolet or myGMC mobile app(s).*

What is changing with OnStar Smart Driver?

GM is discontinuing the Smart Driver product across all GM vehicles and will automatically unenroll any customers currently enrolled in Smart Driver.

When will this change happen?

We expect that customers will be unenrolled automatically by June 26, 2024.

Why make this change?

We established Smart Driver to promote safer driving behavior for the benefit of customers who chose to participate. However, based on customer feedback, we’ve decided to discontinue the product across all GM vehicles.

What actions does a customer need to take?

No action is needed from the customer. 

We expect that customers will be unenrolled automatically by June 26, 2024.

Who is impacted by this change?

All OnStar members globally who are currently enrolled in Smart Driver.

What about customers who use Smart Driver and want another way to see their driving behavioral trends?

Once Smart Driver is discontinued, we do not have plans to offer similar functionality.

What happens to my driving behavior data that was previously collected from Smart Driver?

We regularly delete or deidentify data we collect, including Smart Driver data, when permitted under our data retention policies and applicable law.

Do customers get a refund with the discontinuation of Smart Driver?

Smart Driver was an optional services offered at no additional cost to customers. Therefore, we will not be offering refunds.

Will any of my existing OnStar services be impacted by the discontinuation of Smart Driver?

No other OnStar services are impacted by this change.

Can I unenroll from Smart Driver sooner than June 26th, 2024?

Customers can unenroll from OnStar Smart Driver at any time by using their, myChevrolet, myGMC, or myCadillac mobile app(s), or through the vehicle brand websites:,, or


To unenroll via the mobile app, click on “settings,” select “OnStar Smart Driver,” and switch off the “Allow OnStar Smart Driver” toggle. The toggle switch is gray when off. An opt-out confirmation message will then appear—click “Opt Out.”


To unenroll via the vehicle brand website, sign into your account. Click on “Account,” scroll down the page and click on “Data & Privacy.” Scroll down to “OnStar Smart Driver” and select “Manage Settings.” From there, switch off the “OnStar Smart Driver” toggle.

Do you share the data with LexisNexis or Verisk, or other third-party telematics exchange companies?

There are no contracts nor telematics data sharing for the Middle East region.

Can I still enroll in Smart Driver before it is discontinued?

With the discontinuation of Smart Driver, we are not encouraging new enrollments.

What vehicles are compatible with OnStar Smart Driver?

OnStar Smart Driver was available on most model year 2021 and newer GM vehicles.

How do I check if I am already enrolled in OnStar Smart Driver?

Customers can see their enrollment status through their, myCadillac, myChevrolet or myGMC mobile app(s) or through the vehicle brand website:,,, or If using the mobile app, click on “Settings” and select “OnStar Smart Driver.” You’ll be able to see if the “Allow OnStar Smart Driver” toggle is “on” or “off” to reflect your enrollment status. The toggle is gray (“off”) when you’re not enrolled.

If using the vehicle brand website, sign into your account. Click on “Account,” scroll down the page and click on “Data & Privacy.” Scroll down to “OnStar Smart Driver” and select “Manage Settings.” The “OnStar Smart Driver” toggle is “on” when your vehicle is enrolled. If you are not enrolled, you will see a prompt to enroll.

Do you auto enroll customers in OnStar Smart Driver?

No, we do not auto enroll customers into OnStar Smart Driver. All customers must opt-in to be enrolled. Smart Driver is an optional service.

What information does OnStar Smart Driver capture?

Upon consent and enrollment in OnStar Smart Driver, depending on vehicle capability, the vehicle will collect specific driving behavior data, including hard braking events, hard acceleration events, speeds over 120 km per hour, average speed, late night driving, seat belt usage, when and where these events occur, and the number of miles driven.

How often is data collected from the vehicle?

If Smart Driver is activated, OnStar Smart Driver data is collected from the vehicle after each drive.

How does GM protect personal information?

GM takes the security of its customers’ data very seriously. We use technical, administrative, and physical safeguards designed to help protect customers’ information from loss, misuse and unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, destruction, or theft.

Will other OnStar Members be able to see my information?

No. OnStar Smart Driver information will not be visible to other OnStar Members unless the owner has shared the vehicle with another individual through the Family Sharing feature.

How soon after a trip will a customer be able to view the data?

Generally, trip data will be available within a few minutes, but it could take up to 24 hours, depending on the length of the trip, traffic on the network and other factors.

Does using OnStar Smart Driver impact my car insurance rates?

OnStar Smart Driver based Insurance Discount programs do not exist in the Middle East region.
